Braintree White Sox AABC East Coast World Series

On Sunday August 6th – the Braintree White Sox ran the table eliminating the Pelham Mets in game #1 and then completing a double header sweep of North Haledon Reds to become the 2017 AABC Stan Musial World Series champions!
Thursday August 3:
Game #1: Pelham Mets 12 Waterford Nationals 5
Recap: Santo Maertz pitched six solid innings while Chris Gonzalez was 3 for 4 and Andrew Camardella had a three-run home run to lead The Pelham Mets over the Wtareford Nationals in the first round of the AABC Stan Musial World Series.
Game #2: Albany Athletics 3 Braintree White Sox 1
Recap: Lefthander Chris Salamida threw a complete game striking out nine batters, yielding just four hits and no earned runs to lead the defending World Series champion Albany Athletics to a 3-1 victory over the Braintree White Sox (Massachusetts) in the first round of the AABC World Series in Torrington, CT. The win was against a 32-0 and highly touted Braintree team of the Cranberry League, which snaps their franchise record win streak.
The A’s opened the game with a bunt single from Cam Overbaugh, then got a sacrifice bunt from Salamida which followed an RBI single by Dan Barbero to give the A’s a 1-0 lead. Albany tacked on a run in the 3rd when Nate Novak doubled and Craig Mastroianni singled him home. IN the 6th, Mastroianni singled then RJ Pingitore sacrificed him over and Greg Sulz followed with an RBI single. Barbero finished with 2 singles and Mastroainni finished with 3 singles to lead the Athletics.
Braintree rallied in the 4th when a walk then outfield miscue led to a sacrifice fly RBI from Eric Muir. Otherwise, Salamida only allowed four runners to reach second base all night. The Athletics, who are playing in their 6th World Series since 2010, face Pelham in Round 2 Friday morning at 10 am at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury. With a win, they would get a third round bye. With a loss, they would play at 4pm again on Friday.
Game #3: Fedell’s Mechanics 3 Long Island Storm 1
Recap: Winning pitcher Mike DeLellis threw a three-hitter in the opening round win for Fedell’s Mechanics. C Mike Girodano had a two-out RBI double and Eris Schitter added a two-out RBI single to lead the scoring for the Mechanics. Andrew Scully had 2 doubles and Zac Burger added two hits for the Fedell’s offense.
Game #4: North Haledon Reds 8 Long Island Gamecocks 0
Recap: Steve Coral pitched a one hit shutout to pace the Reds to a game one win at the World Series. he gave up one infield hit in the fourth inning while striking out one and walking none. The Reds one and two hitters were a combined 6 for 8. Sean Guida was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and a triple. Ryan MacFarlane was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and one RBI. Steve Nappone chipped in with two RBI’s. The Reds next play Friday morning at 10am Fuessenich Park against the winner of Bourne Mariners (MA) and the Watertown Blaze (CT).
Game #5: Watertown Blaze 1 Bourne Mariners 0
Recap: In his first start in 2 seasons, Matt Quintana threw a complete game shutout, striking out 17 batters and allowing a lone hit in the 5th inning as the Blaze took game 1, 1-0. Garrett DeLotto had the big blow in the top of the 7th inning with a lead off solo home run that traveled an estimated 420 feet over the right center field wall. DeLotto also doubled in the game while Chris Callahan added 2 hits for the Blaze. Tom Farmer pitched very well for the Bourne Mariners going 7 innings, allowing 6 hits and striking out 10.
Friday August 4:
Game #6: Braintree White Sox 13 Long Island Storm 5
Recap: Tim Flight pitched a complete game striking out seven while scattering five runs. Mike Muir went 2-2 with 2 RBI. Will Brennan and Brandon Cippola each had two hits as Braintree eliminates the Long Island Storm.
Game #7: Bourne Mariners 4 Long Island Gamecocks 0
Recap: Joe Oriola threw six strong shutout innings and Michael Young finished off the shutout as Bourne advanced to the evening game eliminating the Gamecocks 4-0. Big hits registered by Jack Harrington, Derek Estes, Dan Cook, and a huge RBI double by Tom Savage. Cook also made a tremendous throw to the plate to complete a double play.
Game #8: Pelham Mets 8 Albany Athletics 2
Recap: Jackson Ramey threw a complete game 4-hitter while Pelham’s Brian Padilla smacked a 2-run homer in the 4th then followed with a 2-run single in the 5th inning to lead the Pelham Mets to a Round 2 victory over the defending champion Albany Athletics by an 8-2 score in the AABC World Series at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury, CT. Pelham goes to 2-0 in the tournament and Albany falls to 1-1.
Despite a sacrifice fly RBI by Dan Barbero in the first inning to give the A’s an early 1-0 lead, Pelham (25-4) responded with eight runs over the final four innings. Luis Castillo added a two-run single and Tristan Rojas added a 2-run double in the 7th to cap the scoring. Barbero doubled for Albany in the loss.
Game #9: North Haledon Reds 4 Watertown Blaze 3
Recap: In game two of the World Series the Reds took on the undefeated Watertown Blaze who were 25–0. In a well played game the Reds held on to advance in the winners bracket. In the bottom of the seventh, with runners on second and third and 2 out, Brett Carrol came on in relief of German Taveras and walked the next batter to load the bases. He then went to a full count and struck out the next batter to pick up the save. Zac Polzer started for the Reds and threw an effective 3.1 innings in the hot humid weather giving up two runs on three hits. He was relieved by German Taveras who picked up the win pitching 3.1 innings giving up 1 run on 4 hits with 2Ks. Mike Cassese had 2 RBIs. Ryan McFarlane and Nick Ramagli also had RBIs. Sean Guida and Ryan Midkiff each had a double. Mike Odenwaelder homered for Watertown.
The key play in the game happened in the bottom of the 6th after a leadoff triple. Taveras struck out the next batter and the Blaze attempted a squeeze. First baseman Steve Nappe fielded the ball with his bare hand and threw the runner out at the plate on a tag play. Calzone then attempted to go to second on the play at the plate and was thrown out there preserving the one run lead.
Game #10: Albany Athletics 4 Bourne Mariners 0
Recap: Albany righthander Ryan Harper tossed a complete game shutout striking out 9 batters and yielding just four hits to lead the Albany Athletics to a 4-0 victory over the Bourne Mariners in the third round of the AABC World Series at Fuessinich Park in Torrington, CT. Greg Sulz hit a two-run double in the third inning to stake the A’s to a 2-0 lead then Albany took advantage of an error in the fourth and a fielders choice RBI from Cody Labadia to get insurance runs. Chris Salamida doubled while Dan Barbero singled twice to lead the Athletics offense. Albany improves to 34-6-1 overall and 2-1 in the tournament while Bourne goes to 22-10 and is eliminated.
Game #11: Watertown Blaze 3 Waterford Nationals 0
Recap: Zach Albin threw a no-bitter with two walks and six strikeouts. The former Baltimore Orioles farmhand induced nine ground outs during his gem. Former Orioles farmhand Mike Odenwaelder reached on an error to lead off the seventh inning and scored the go ahead on a bloop single by Chris Ayer that sparked a 3-run out burst that sent the Blaze on to victory.
Game #12: North Haledon Reds 3 Fedells Mechanics 0
Recap: Jacinto Gonell threw a 2 hit complete game shutout. He struck out nine and walked four. Sean Guido was 2 for 3 for the Reds with one run scored. Marco Baratta, Rob Stern, and Mike Rizzo each had an RBI for the Reds.

Saturday August 5:

Recap: Down 3-2 in the sixth inning – the White Sox rallied to take the victory 6-4.
Albany Athletics 7 Watertown Blaze 3
Recap: Pinch hitter Pat Landers made the most of his first World Series at bat and hit a three-run double to snap a 3-3 tie in a 6th inning rally to lead the Albany Athletics to a comeback victory, 7-3, over the host Watertown Blaze in the AABC World Series at Fuessenich Park in Torrington, CT. The game was a rematch of the 2016 World Series championship between the two teams, who both had losses heading into the game today. Prior to Landers’ pinch hit double, Craig Mastroianni singled in two runs to tie the score at 3-3. The A’s capped the scoring on an infield error to complete a six-run rally and build a 7-3 lead.
“This is a signature win against a very good Watertown team and hopefully will propel us to a few more wins to capture the title again,” said 22nd year manager Joe Altieri. “Castellani was outstanding for them and held us down for five innings but we showed resiliency and built a rally in that 6th inning, then Craig had the tying hit and Pat (Landers) came up with probably the biggest hit in his amateur career.” Bryan Carr relieved starter Matt Snyder in the 4th inning and did not yield a run in 3 innings of relief while striking out two batters and giving up just two hits. He escaped a bases loaded jam in the 4th and a leadoff double in the 5th. Lefthander Chris Salamida pitched a scoreless 7th with two strikeouts to close the game. Albany’s Cam Overbaugh hit a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the first inning while Salamida and Nate Novak collected two singles each.
Watertown got on the board in the first inning on an RBI double by Tony Pattane then got a sac fly from Chris Callahan in the second inning to stake the Blaze to a 3-1 lead. Nick DeLotto hit two singles but the Blaze could not muster any runs after the second inning. Albany eliminates Watertown and advances to the 5th round but due to weather, games will not be played the rest of today. The Athletics will play the New Jersey Mets tomorrow at 10 am at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury, then there will be three teams remaining for the final two games of the tournament. The Athletics improve to 35-6-1 overall and Watertown drops to 25-2, both of its losses coming in the World Series this weekend.
North Haledon Reds 9 Pelham Mets 1
Recap: Mike Garcia pitched a complete game for the Reds giving up 1 run on 4 hits. He struck out 9 and walked 1. At the plate Nick Ramagli was 2-3 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI. Ryan MacFarlane was 2-5 with a run scored, 1 RBI, and 4 stolen bases. Reds now play Albany Athletics at 10am at Municipal Stadium on Sunday. If they win they will have to be defeated twice. If they lose there will be a draw for the all important bye with Albany.

Recap: Reds righthander Matt Ornstein gave up just two hits and one earned run in five innings to hold down the defending champion Albany Athletics and lead the North Haledon (NJ) Reds to a 3-1 victory in the semifinals of the AABC Stan Musial World Series at Municipal Stadium in Waterbury, CT. The loss gave the 2016 champions a third place finish, their second in three years, and propelled North Haledon to the championship games against Braintree later in the afternoon.
Ornstein held down the Athletics then turned the game over to relievers Anthony Pisano and Mike Carroll who each threw an inning of scoreless relief. Ornstein only allowed a solo home run to the Athletics Nate Novak in the 4th inning. North Haledon, meanwhile, got an RBI single in the first inning by Stephen Nappe then Nappe hit a solo home run in the 5th inning. Ryan McFarlane accounted for the Reds’ other run with an RBI single in the second inning.
“It was a tough day for us offensively,” said 22nd year manager Joe Altieri. “We could’t get anything going but hung in there and fought even into the 7th inning with a couple of runners on base and a hit or two away from tying the game.” A’s lefthander Joe Pokrentowski escaped trouble throughout the game including two bases loaded jams. He yielded just five hits and struck out two in a complete game effort. “This was one of the most competitive World Series events we’ve participated in with ten really strong teams. There no question the most talented teams were there at the end,” said Altieri. “I’m really proud of our group and their accomplishments this year. They had their heart in every game and especially at the end.”
The Athletics, who made their 6th World Series appearance since 2010, fall to 35-7-1 overall. After losing to Braintree in two championships later in the day, North Haledon finishes 32-7 overall. Braintree, the new AABC World Series champion, finishes 37-1 with its only loss of the season coming to the Athletics in the World Series opener.
TOURNAMENT NOTES: Albany lost starting catcher Craig Mastroianni to a severely sprained ankle during the celebration in the team’s comeback win over Watertown Saturday…Dan Barbero led the team in hitting with a .400 average (6-for-15)…The A’s pitching staff gave up three runs or less in four of five tournament games…In the last three years, the A’s have more World Series wins (10) than any other AABC Stan Musial team…Albany eliminated Watertown for the second straight year…It was the 6th World Series appearance for the A’s since 2010.

Jarrod Sharkey had a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the lead and the White Sox held on
even after a lead off double by the Reds (including a great scoop at first base by Marc Doyle) to take home the trophy.
